Why I Started Heirloom & Bound: Preserving Family Stories Through Personalized Children's Books

Why I Started Heirloom & Bound: Preserving Family Stories Through Personalized Children's Books

Growing up, one of my favorite things was hearing stories about the people in my family.

I heard about my great-great-grandmother escaping Mexico during a time of conflict and starting over in a new country. I heard about my great-grandfather gathering intelligence for the United States during the Cold War. My uncle has traveled to more countries than I knew existed. My sister beat cancer as a little girl. Every family gathering seemed to bring another story I hadn't heard before.

Looking back, I don't think I realized how much those stories shaped me.

They taught me what courage looked like. They taught me that ordinary people really can do extraordinary things. They gave me examples of hope, resilience, adventure, and sacrifice that felt much more personal than reading about someone in a history book because these were my people.

Passing down stories for my own family

When my son, Luke, was born, I found myself thinking about those stories again.

I wanted him to know them too. I also realized that our own little family was beginning to create stories worth remembering.

The story of how my husband and I met at a Valentine's Day party in Dallas. The story of finding out we were expecting Luke. The story of the day he joined our family. The vacations we'll take together, the traditions we'll start, and the little moments that probably won't feel remarkable while we're living them—but someday will become the stories our grandchildren ask us to tell.

I remember one evening rocking Luke to sleep and thinking about all of the stories I had grown up hearing. One day he would ask how Mom and Dad met. He would ask what he was like as a baby. He would want to know about the people who came before him. I didn't want to rely on my memory to tell those stories. I wanted them written down in a way that he could understand and enjoy as a child.

That got me searching for a personalized children's book that could preserve our family's memories.

I Couldn't Find the Book I Wanted

I found lots of personalized books where you could change a child's name or customize a character to look like your family. But I couldn't find a custom family storybook that told our actual story.

I wanted something that felt like a real book. Something we'd proudly leave on our bookshelf, and something we could read together over and over again until Luke knew those stories by heart.

I wasn't looking for another toy or keepsake that would eventually end up in a storage box. I wanted something that would become part of our family's traditions. When I couldn't find it, I decided to make it.

Why We Created Heirloom & Bound

That idea eventually became Heirloom & Bound.

Every book begins with your story.

You answer a guided questionnaire with thoughtful prompts about your memories, your family, and the moments you want to preserve. From there, we transform those memories into a beautifully written, professionally illustrated personalized family storybook. Before it's ever printed, you'll have the opportunity to review every page and request edits so it feels exactly right.

Every family has stories worth telling.

Some are remarkable historical journeys. Some are love stories. Some are about welcoming a new baby. Some are funny family adventures.

And some are quiet moments that might not seem extraordinary today, but will become priceless years from now.

Those are the stories that shape families. Those are the stories children remember. Those are the stories worth preserving.

Why Family Stories Matter

One of my favorite parts about creating Heirloom & Bound has been realizing just how different every family's story is.

Some families want to preserve a grandparent's childhood or immigration story. Others want to tell how Mom and Dad first met. Some want to capture the excitement of welcoming a new baby, while others want to remember a once-in-a-lifetime family adventure.

No two books are ever the same because no two families are the same. That's what makes these books so meaningful. They're not just personalized with a child's name. They're built around the real stories that make your family unique.

My Hope for Every Family

My hope is that these books become part of a family's traditions. Maybe they're read before bedtime, or they come off the shelf every birthday or every Christmas. Maybe they are asked for every time the family gets together.

Stories have a way of connecting us to the people who came before us and inspiring the people who come after us. I know they did for me!

I hope Heirloom & Bound helps more families preserve those stories for generations to come.
